Sabre women’s basketball opens Superior Holiday Shootout with thriller

Marian University women’s basketball (2-8, 0-2 NACC) rallied from a 16-point deficit at halftime but fell to UW-Superior 60-44 after a tough fourth quarter.

  • Both offenses had a tough start as Marian held a slim 8-6 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
  • The second quarter was all UW-Superior as the Yellow Jackets outscored Marian 22-4 for the stanza.
  • UWS opened the quarter with a 21-2 run to help build a 28-12 lead going into halftime.
  • Marian didn’t shy away as the Sabres dominated the third period to tie the game heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The two squads traded baskets to open the quarter before Marian scored six unanswered points to only trail 30-20.
  • The Sabres then scored 14 unanswered points over the final 4:30 of the quarter to tie the game at 34-34 after three quarters.
  • The tie held in the first minutes at 37-37 before the Yellow Jackets were able to pull away with 11 unanswered points.
  • A 12-5 spurt to end the game from UWS saw the final score settle at 60-44.

  • Marian went just 16-of-58 (.276) from the field and hit one three-pointer on 10 chances.
  • UW-Superior was 23-of-65 (.354) in the game and 10-of-27 (.370) on triples.
  • The Sabre defense held UWS to 2-of-20 (.100) shooting in the first quarter and zero three-pointers on 10 shots.
  • Each team had 24 points in the paint and UWS held a slim 13-6 advantage on second chance points.
  • This was the first meeting since the 2015-16 season between the two programs with Marian falling to 0-3.

Sophomore Kiara Williams posted a game-high 20 points with 14 rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore Chelsea King added 16 points and had six rebounds.
Junior Lexi Brakebush had six points and three rebounds.
