Sabre men’s volleyball falls at WLC in five sets

Marian University men’s volleyball (7-6, 1-1 NACC) was defeated in five sets at Wisconsin Lutheran 25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran opened the match with an 8-6 lead and then went on a 9-2 run to lead 17-8.
  • Marian was able to trim its deficit to 20-15 before four unanswered points from WLC put the set out of reach.
  • The Sabres never trailed in the second set and led by as many as four points but the two sides found themselves knotted at 23-23.
  • The freshman duo fo Adrian Calderon and Giancarlo Bou produced a kill and service ace to give Marian the set win.
  • The third set opened with a 9-9 stalemate before Marian went on a 6-1 spurt, a lead the Sabres never relinquished.
  • WLC was able to make things interesting cutting the Marian lead down from 23-17 with five straight points.
  • Back-to-back kills from senior Derek Wills and Calderon put Marian ahead 2-1, though.
  • The Warriors started the fourth set ahead 15-10 only for Marian to score five unanswered points.
  • WLC was able to immediately retake the lead, however, going on a 7-2 run to ultimately force a fifth set.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran had a strong start leading 4-3 before going on a 5-2 spurt to lead 9-5.
  • Marian was able to rally and only trail by two on several occasions but WLC was able to hold onto this advantage.

  • The Warriors finished with 12 aces to only six for the Sabres.
  • Marian hit over .333 in the three sets they won, while WLC hit .412 in the fifth set.
  • The Sabres are now 1-2 in matches that go five sets.
  • This is the first WLC victory over Marian in five meetings.

Freshman Adrian Calderon had the first double-double of his career recording 18 kills with 10 digs.
Senior Isaac Dreifuerst hit .379 and had 14 kills.
Senior Trent Goo Sun posted a double-double with 30 assists to go with 15 digs.
