Sabre men’s basketball falters late at CUW

Marian University men’s basketball (0-12, 0-6 NACC) led by 21 at halftime but fell to Concordia Wisconsin 75-74.

  • The Sabres came out shooting and quickly led 21-6 with 12:03 left in the first half.
  • A 17-5 run followed that put Marian ahead 38-11 with 4:37 remaining, it was the largest lead of the game for either squad.
  • CUW was able to build a little momentum closing the half out with an 11-5 run and trailed 43-22 at the break.
  • The end of the first half helped propel the Falcons at the start of the second as CUW opened the stanza with a 24-8 spurt to only trail by five.
  • The Sabres still found themselves ahead 51-46 with 12:48 left in the game and responded with a 17-8 run to lead 68-54 with 5:13 left.
  • A free throw from senior Eli Vogel with 1:45 left put Marian ahead 74-64 but it would be the final point Marian scored.
  • Concordia Wisconsin would score 11 unanswered points to close the game sealing the win with two free throws with 16 ticks left.
  • The Sabres were able to get a pair of shots up on its final possession but neither found the bottom of the net.

  • Marian had one of its best game of the season offensively shooting 25-of-43 (.581) from the field and 10-of-21 (.476) on three-pointers.
  • Concordia Wisconsin shot 22-of-54 (.407) for the game and 7-of-18 (.389) on three-pointers.  The Falcons were also 24-of-31 (.774) from the charity stripe.
  • The Sabres committed 25 turnovers which led CUW to a 35-26 advantage in points off of turnovers.
  • Each team had 28 points in the paint.
  • The Marian bench provided 37 of the 74 Sabre points.
  • Marian has now lost the last two match-ups with CUW and is 4-4 over the last eight meetings.
