Sabre field hockey cruises past Sewanee in SAA action

Marian University field hockey (7-5, 3-3 SAA) defeated Sewanee 7-1 in its return to conference action.

  • Marian was able to start quickly with sophomore Jikke Biemans scoring off of a corner just 3:14 into the game, assist to sophomore Eva Houtackers.
  • The Tigers responded with just 2:44 left in the stanza to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The final three quarters was all Marian with the Sabres scoring twice in the first 1:54 of the second quarter.
  • Both of the goals were scored by Eva Houtackers, freshman Angelene Castro and Biemans assisted the goals.
  • This gave the Sabres a 3-1 lead going into the second half.
  • Sophomore Allyson Nichols scored twice in the final 2:40 of the third quarter to give the Sabres a 5-1 lead.  Houtackers and sophomore Merel Nagelkerke each had an assist.
  • Sophomore Indi Rameckers then opened the scoring for the fourth quarter with an assist from Nichols.
  • Nichols would conclude the scoring with her third goal of the game, another assist for Nagelkerke.

  • Marian finished with a 40-2 edge in shots, 26-1 for shots on goal.  The Sabres did not allow a shot in the second half.
  • The Sabres also had a hefty advantage in penalty corners 18-2.
  • Marian improves to 4-0 all-time against Sewanee.

Sophomore Allyson Nichols had her third multi-goal game in the past five games with three goals and an assist for seven points.
Sophomore Eva Houtackers had two goals and two assists for a season-high six points.
Sophomore Merel Nagelkerke had a pair of assists.
