Sabre baseball splits pair of one-run games

Marian University baseball (8-10, 3-3 NACC) split another conference series falling to Illinois Tech 5-4 before winning 8-7.

  • Marian was the home team for both games as the doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Herr-Baker Field.

GAME 1

  • Marian took advantage of two hit by pitches and a walk in the first three plate appearances to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • A bases-loaded walk brought home the first Illinois Tech run in the next half inning.
  • The Sabres were able to respond in their half of the second with senior Jacob Kleeman driving in sophomore Keon Booker to put Marian ahead 4-1.
  • The Scarlet Hawks were able to cut their deficit in half in the fifth inning at 4-2.
  • An error proved to be costly for Marian in the seventh in a three-run frame that put Tech ahead 5-4.
  • Marian put the tying run on base in the final three innings but were unable to rally.

GAME 2

  • A double in the opening frame helped the Scarlet Hawks take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Senior Jacob Kleemann doubled to open the Marian half of the first and eventually scored to tie the game.
  • Marian then took its first lead of the game after freshman Ayden Kanaman drove a run in during the fourth inning followed by a ground-rule double from Kleemann that scored a pair.
  • All of the runs scored came with two outs in the inning.
  • The Scarlet Hawks answered in the next half inning with a bases-loaded walk to only trail 4-2.
  • A first-and-third double steal helped Marian extend its lead to 5-2 in the fifth.
  • Then in the top of the sixth, a failed rundown helped spark a four-run sixth to put Illinois Tech ahead 6-5.
  • A triple from the Scarlet Hawks in the top of the eighth gave Tech a 7-5 advantage.
  • Another two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth was capped off by a double from senior James Bornick that plated three runs and put Marian ahead 8-7.
  • The tying run for the Scarlet Hawks reached scoring position in the top of the ninth but Marian was able to lock down the win.
  • Marian is now 7-12 all-time against Illinois Tech.
  • All three NACC doubleheaders so far this season has seen Marian drop the first game followed by a game two win.

Senior James Bornick went 4-for-8 (.500) with five runs driven in, four of which came in game two.
Senior Logan Rademan was 3-for-4 with a run scored in game two.
Senior Michael Martinez (3-0) earned the win in game two allowing just one run over the final two innings.
