Rally falls just short for Sabre NCAA men’s hockey

Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey (9-15-1, 6-11-1 NCHA) was narrowly defeated 5-3 by CUW in the final game of the regular season.

  • After being shutout the previous night, CUW started fast scoring just 19 seconds into the game.
  • The Falcons padded their lead scoring with just 2:23 left in the period and went into the first intermission ahead 2-0.
  • The 2-0 score held all the way to the third period when sophomore Nolan Flint scored just 50 seconds into the third period with assists from junior Noah Pickart and freshman Brendan Bottem.
  • The Falcons answered and extended their lead to 4-1 scoring at the 9:11 and 11:03 marks.
  • Sophomore Caden Carlson scored a pair of goals separated by just 2:15, the second coming with just 1:21 to play, to cut the Marian deficit down to 4-3.
  • Both goals had an assist from senior Daunte Fortner with Bottem helping the first score and freshman Brady Brenner the second.
  • CUW was able to hold off the rally scoring an empty-net goal with just under a minute to play.

  • Marian finished with a 47-31 edge in shots recording 19 shots in the second and third periods.
  • The Sabres had 35 face-off wins to only 30 for CUW.
  • Neither side had a power-play goal with Marian having three chances and two for CUW.
  • Marian finishes the regular season sixth in the NCHA with 21 points.
  • The Sabres are now 32-8-1 all-time against the Falcons having dropped the last three road games of the rivalry.
