Marian NCAA men’s hockey punches ticket to postseason with shutout

Marian University NCAA men’s ice hockey (9-14-1, 6-10-1 NCHA) earned its spot in the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs with a 3-0 victory over Concordia Wisconsin.

  • The opening period saw neither team score the lamp and the second period almost finished the same.
  • The Sabres were able to open the scoring for the game with just 1.3 seconds left in the second period with a goal from sophomore Caden Carlson.
  • Senior Daunte Fortner and junior Noah Pickart assisted what proved to be the game-winner.
  • The third period saw the physicality pick up but defenses continued to dominate.
  • Senior Matteo Pecchia was able to force a turnover in the neutral zone which led to freshman Robert Pizzey extending the Marian lead with 3:09 to play.
  • Fellow freshman Edison Weeks also earned an assist on the play.
  • Marian iced the game when freshman Brendan Bottem forced a turnover and netted an empty-net goal with 1:55 left to play.

  • Marian held a 38-25 advantage for shots and had at least 11 shots in all three periods.
  • Each team had one power-play chance and neither side scored.
  • The Sabres finished with a slim 34-29 edge in draws.
  • This was the second shutout of the season for Marian.
  • With the win, Marian clinched a spot in the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs.
  • Depending on the results of tomorrow, Marian will be seeded between the No. 5 and No. 7 seed.
  • Marian is now 32-7-1 having won the last two games via shutout.
