Marian men’s volleyball splits final home triangular

Marian University men’s volleyball (7-5, 1-0 NACC) fell to Augustana (Ill.) before sweeping Mount St. Joseph in the final home triangular of the season.

  VS. AUGUSTANA (L, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17)

  • Augustana opened the match with a 10-6 lead only for Marian to score five straight to take an 11-10 lead.
  • The Sabres led 16-15 before using a small 5-2 run to lead by four.
  • The Vikings were able to rally only trailing 22-21 but Marian held Augustana off scoring the final three points of the set.
  • Augustana came out firing to open the second set and led 7-1.
  • The Sabres chipped away at the deficit but each time the Vikings were able to score three unanswered and evened the sets.
  • A similarly strong start saw the Vikings lead 8-4 and they were able to take that advantage out to 17-11.
  • Marian rallied with an 8-3 spurt to only trail 20-19, but Augustana scored five of the next six points to take the lead.
  • The fourth set opened with a 14-14 stalemate with an Augustana timeout shifting the set.
  • Out the stoppage, the Vikings were able to score five straight and went on to secure the win.

VS. MOUNT ST. JOSEPH (W, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20)

  • The Marian offense came alive in its second match of the day taking care of Mount St. Joseph in straight sets.
  • MSJ opened the match with a 4-3 lead before Marian took over with a 10-4 run to lead 13-8.
  • The Sabres maintained its lead for the remainder of the set.
  • The Lions looked poised to even the sets starting the second with a 12-7 edge.
  • MSJ brought its lead out to 15-12 before an 8-3 spurt from Marian put the Sabres ahead 20-18.
  • Marian was able to seal the set shortly after scoring four unanswered points.
  • After the Sabres opened the third with a 10-9 lead Marian extended its advantage with an 8-2 run.
  • The Lions were able to cut the deficit down to as small as four but Marian was able to seal the sweep.

VS. AUGUSTANA

  • Each team had 41 kills with the Vikings hitting .299 in the match to only .074 for the Sabres.
  • The Vikings were able to finish with a 43-39 edge in digs.
  • At the net, Augustana had 12 blocks to only six for the Sabres.
  • Marian is now 1-1 all-time against the Vikings.

VS. MOUNT ST. JOSEPH

  • Marian finished with a 39-35 advantage for kills and hit .325 in the match with only 12 kills.
  • Each team had 28 digs, while the Sabres had seven blocks to only three for the Lions.
  • This was the third sweep of the season for Marian.
  • The Sabres evened the all-time series with the Lions at 3-3 having won the last three match-ups.

Freshman Adrian Calderon had 12 kills and five total blocks against Augustana and added 11 kills against the Lions.
Senior Derek Wills had 14 kills against MSJ while hitting .462 and recording four assisted blocks.
Senior Trent Goo Sun finished with 49 assists on the day and 11 digs.
