Marian men’s basketball uses dominant first half to down Sabercats

Marian University men’s basketball (3-0, 0-0 NACC) earned a 78-56 win over Maranatha Baptist, the first 3-0 start for the Sabres since the 2000-01 season.

  • Marian scored the first 11 points of the game and promptly forced a Sabercat timeout just three minutes in.
  • A Sabre run of 15-2 shortly after put Marian ahead 31-6 with just 5:25 left in the first half.
  • Marian was able to maintain this advantage and went into halftime ahead 40-16.
  • Already with a 49-27 lead, Marian scored seven unanswered to build a 29-point lead.
  • The Sabres maintained a comfortable lead and built their advantage to as large as 30 with 3:44 and 2:57 to play.
  • An 11-3 run from MBU to end the game set the final at 78-56.

  • Marian shot 29-of-76 (.382) for the game and 10-of-36 (.278) from beyond the arc.
  • The Sabercats finished 20-of-44 (.455) from the field but just 1-of-7 (.143) on three-point attempts.
  • The Sabres forced 25 turnovers and outscored Maranatha Baptist 31-2 in points off turnovers.
  • Marian also grabbed 21 offensive rebounds and converted them to 14 points.
  • The Sabres are now 46-6 all-time against Maranatha Baptist and on a seven-game winning streak.
  • The 3-0 start for Marian is the first since the 2000-01 season, a year the Sabres went to the NCAA Tournament.

Junior Alex Vassilakis scored a team-high 15 points with five assists, three steals, and seven rebounds, six of which were offensive.
Sophomore Sam Gingras went for 13 points and had seven rebounds with three steals.
Senior Eli Vogel netted 11 points to go with three steals.
