Marian baseball splits opening day of Wheaton Invitational

Marian University baseball (5-6, 0-0 NACC) was defeated by Saint Mary’s (Minn.) 13-3 in seven innings before beating Calvin 13-7 to open the Wheaton Invitational.

GAME 1 (VS. SMU, L 13-3 [7], AWAY)

  • Marian was able to start strong scoring two runs in the first inning with sophomore Marc Jones and graduate student Riley Palmquist each driving in a run.
  • The Cardials cut that lead in half in their half of the first and tied the game at 2-2 in the second.
  • A run-producing single from senior Jacob Kleemann put Marian back on top in the fourth, but SMU was able to take their first lead of the day in the bottom half with a three-run frame.
  • The Cardinals were able to break the game open scoring five runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
  • Marian is now winless in four games all-time with SMU.

GAME 2 (VS. CALVIN, W 13-7, HOME)

  • Another strong start to game two of the day saw Marian score four runs in the bottom of the second to open the scoring.
  • Senior Logan Rademan capped the frame with a double to bring home Kleemann.
  • A home run from the Knights in the next half inning cut the Marian lead to 4-2, but the Sabres responded with three runs in the fourth.
  • Jones drove in the first two runs for the inning followed by a single from Palmquist to plate a Sabre.
  • Calvin once again made things interesting cutting the Marian lead down to just one at 7-6 with four unanswered runs between the fifth to seventh inning.
  • Marian was able to end the momentum shift and built a seven-run lead scoring six runs in the eighth.
  • The highlight of the frame was a pinch-hit three-run homer from senior James Bornick, his second long ball of the year.
  • An unearned run came across for the Knights in the top of the ninth to put the final at 13-7.
  • Marian is now 1-1 against Calvin all-time with this being the first meeting since 1988.

Graduate student Robbie Knorr was 3-for-4 with two runs driven in and two runs scored against Calvin.
Sophomore Marc Jones drove in three runs and scored twice against Calvin as part of a two-hit game.
Senior Michael Martinez earned his first save of the season against Calvin allowing just one unearned run over 2.0 innings of work.
