Excel Engineering was founded as an architecture and structural engineering firm by Gary Runge. The company’s first office was opened in 1990 in Campbellsport, Wisconsin. Civil engineering and surveying were added to Excel’s services in 1993. This was our first step in becoming your complete source for architecture and engineering. Excel’s employees purchased half of the company in 1994 from Excel’s founder to become an employee-owned company.
Excel completed the construction of a new 50-person office and relocated to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1996.
Cold-formed steel engineering was added in 1997 as Excel continued to expand our services. Excel took a giant leap to become your complete source for architecture and engineering by adding mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering in 1998. Dairy process engineering was added in 2001 to better serve our Wisconsin-based food processing clients.
Construction was completed in 2002 on the first of many additions to the Fond du Lac campus, doubling the workstations to 100.
Excel’s employees purchased the remaining half of the company shares from the founder in 2006. A new President and Board of Directors was elected at this time. By 2008, Excel had earned a reputation for having better plans. This reputation inspired a new logo and the tagline “Always a Better Plan.”
Construction was completed in 2014 on Excel’s second expansion to the Fond du Lac Campus. The expansion provided space for a growing architectural staff and increased the overall number of workstations to 168. Excel expanded its structural engineering expertise when it began offering precast concrete engineering and detailing in 2017.
A third expansion to the Fond du Lac campus was completed in 2018. The expansion increased workstations to 235, while also adding a new lobby area, conference area, and outside employee pavilion.
In 2019, furniture procurement was added to Excel’s interior design services. This value-added service simplifies the move-in process and improves the client’s overall construction experience. Excel Studio was launched in 2020 to offer creative services to clients, while also enhancing Excel’s overall marketing efforts.
In 2021, Excel completed a fourth building expansion. The two-story addition featured 104 workstations and fun employee amenities like a two-story glue laminate wood slide and a golf simulator. Excel created the Specialty Structures Division in 2022 which combined the Cold-formed Steel and Precast Concrete Engineering groups with a newly formed Structural Glass Engineering group.
Today, Excel provides a number of services including engineering, architecture, interior architecture, creative, construction-related, and surveying. Excel continues to innovate to be the best partner they can be to their clients and for their employees. Learn more at https://www.excelengineer.com/
