Commonwealth to Celebrate the Grand Opening of Fond du Lac’s New Affordable Apartment Community – Brooke Street Lofts

Commonwealth and Wisconsin Partnership for Housing Development invite you to come see the beautiful transformation of the Historic Northern Casket Company and Winnebago Cheese buildings into unique affordable housing.

The Commonwealth Companies, in partnership with Wisconsin Partnership for Housing Development (WPHD), will host a Grand Opening Celebration and Open House for Brooke Street Lofts on Thursday, November 9, 2023. The reception and ribbon cutting will begin at 10:00 a.m followed by a public open house from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at 16 N. Brooke Street in Fond du Lac.

Brooke Street Lofts is a 62-unit, affordable housing community, built within the historic Northern Casket Company and Winnebago Cheese buildings. The development offers 1, 2, & 3-bedroom apartment homes along with a community room, exercise room, onsite property management office, and an outdoor area with a playground. The buildings are conveniently located near the heart of downtown Fond du Lac and on the same street as Commonwealth’s Fond du Lac office.

“Being right across the street from our office, we really enjoyed watching the entire transformation of Brooke Street Lofts from start to finish,” said Jonathan Nesburg, Project Developer. “We are proud to have preserved these two legacy buildings that have so much history embedded in them, and turn them into beautiful homes that people are proud to live in.”
The $19.9M project included funding sources from LIHTC and Historic Tax Credits, allocated through the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA), an equity investment from Sugar Creek Capital and Cinnaire, a first mortgage and construction financing throughWHEDA, American Rescue Plan Act funding from the State of Wisconsin and City of Fond du Lac, and an affordable housing program grant through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago.

“Affordable housing is a critical need across the state, and we’re thrilled to have been able to support this project, and to celebrate the positive impact it will have for the Fond du Lac community,” said DOA Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld.
